Artist Statement
ON MIRRORS:
I don’t know who originally said it (Shakespeare? Someone long before him, probably?), but it is said that playwrights hold a mirror up to nature. If that’s true, I think mine must be a fun-house mirror. I write plays that reflect our world, but a warped version of it, with rules that are askew from our own. My plots wobble the consequences that naturally follow our actions and my characters wibble the rules of social convention to–like a fun house mirror–make audiences laugh, and hopefully, surprise them with a different view of themselves.
ON REVOLUTION:
I write plays in which people take action, make bold and complicated choices, and face consequences. By writing action-forward plays, I am to disrupt the cyclical conversations that stagnate our daily lives. To put it another way, I aim to disrupt all that talking-angrily-about-politics-but-ultimately-feeling-powerless-to-do-anything-and-getting-stuckness. I hope that my plays spark audiences into action by showing that action is indeed possible, and beyond that, necessary, and beyond even that, exciting.
